BlueGriffon HTML editor

The next-generation Web Editor based on the rendering engine of Firefox

Finding a good standalone HTML editor can be tough – there are lots of options. The various IDEs for web development do a good job but they can be rather resource heavy for just editing a bit of HTML. This is where BlueGriffon ( comes in.

Netscape Navigator (remember that?) was a complete suite including web browser, HTML editor and email client. When Netscape closed the code formed the basis for both Firefox (web browser) and Thunderbird (email), but the HTML editor was a bit unloved. First there was Nvu (discontinued), which then evolved to KompoZer (ceased development), now there is BlueGriffon – which hopefully will have a better history.

Its main features are:

BlueGriffon complies with the W3C‘s web standards. It can create and edit pages in accordance to HTML 4, XHTML 1.1, HTML 5 and XHTML 5. It supports CSS 2.1 and all parts of CSS 3 already implemented by Gecko. BlueGriffon also includes SVG-edit, an XUL-based editor for SVG that is originally distributed as an add-on to Firefox and was adapted to BlueGriffon.
